The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) has awarded the 2014 Diversity Award to Professor Polina Golland for her leadership role in creating the new annual “Rising Stars in EECS” workshop for women. The ECEDHA Diversity Award recognizes outstanding and proactive work to increase cultural, ethnic and gender diversity within the nearly 300 ABET accredited ECE departments across the U.S. and Canada that comprise the organization.
The Rising Stars workshop helps create the pipeline for women interested in an academic career. The first two workshops held at MIT brought together around 75 top women interested in academia. Polina not only shaped the overall vision, but built the infrastructure needed for follow-up workshops in the years to come. The Rising Stars workshop will be hosted at U.C. Berkeley in 2014.
Polina is a leader in the field of biomedical image analysis and understanding. She directs the Medical Vision Group in CSAIL; her current research focuses on developing statistical analysis methods for characterization of biological processes using images as a source of information. Polina received the Burgess (‘52) & Elizabeth Jamieson Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013.
