EECS students Enric Boix-Adserà and Alireza Fallah, both PhD candidates in the LIDS group, were named Apple Scholars in AI/ML for 2021-22, in an announcement from Apple on April 15th. The company stated, “The Apple Scholars program was created to recognize the contributions of emerging leaders in computer science and engineering at the graduate and postgraduate level. Nominated students were selected based on their innovative research, their record as thought leaders and collaborators in their fields, and their unique commitment to take risks and push the envelope in machine learning and AI.”
Alireza Fallah studies optimization, theory of machine-learning, game theory, and statistical inference. He is advised by Prof. Asu Ozdaglar. Before coming to MIT, Fallah earned a dual B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Sharif University of Technology, and interned in the Biomedical Imaging Group at EPFL. A multiple medalist in math olympiads at the national and international level, Fallah has been named a Siebel Scholar and a MathWorks Engineering Fellow, and received the Ernst A. Guillemin SM Thesis Award in Electrical Engineering in 2020.
Enric Boix-Adserà studies machine learning theory, average-case complexity, and high-dimensional statistics. He is advised by Prof. Guy Bresler. Before coming to MIT, Boix-Adserà earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Princeton University. He has also been named a Siebel Scholar and an NSF Graduate Research Fellow.
