Four women from MIT were among the participants in the recent Rising Stars in EECS 2019 workshop at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

EECS PhD students Andrea Lincoln and Emily Toomey, CSAIL postdoctoral fellow Mina Konokovic Lukovic, and MIT Media Lab PhD candidate Natasha Jaques were among 90 participants in the prestigious event for early-career engineers and computer scientists interested in academic careers.

Launched at MIT in 2012, the annual workshop has since been hosted by the University of California at Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, MIT (in 2013, 2015, and 2018), and Stanford University.

This year's event featured panel discussions on everything from finding faculty jobs to establishing a healthy work/life balance. In addition, all participants received feedback on their job talks and opportunities for one-to-one mentoring, updating their professional portraits, and recording short videos about their research highlights.

A highlight of this year's event was a research pitch competition in which participants were invited to provide 90-second summaries of their work to mentors, faculty members, and other Rising Stars participants. Four winners — including Jaques — will be invited back to Illinois to present talks.

For more information about the event, visit the Rising Stars in EECS 2019 website.
